I think if you were like me, a Filipina who grew up in the late 80s-early 90s, you would have had the same answer. You would have either said, Sound of Music, or Miss Saigon. It had Lea Salonga, who at the time was the only Filipina in my little kid mind that I know who is famous all over the world for this role. She made me feel like I could accomplish anything. She made me realize that there's a larger world out there. The songs were romantic, the songs were powerful, like all good theatrical songs should be. In my first visit to New York, I made sure that that was the musical I would see. My parents made it happen. And as if that wasn't enough, when Miss Saigon came to the Philippines, I watched it too. Both of them had Lea Salonga as Kim (Lucky lucky!) I am very thankful for this musical. For every song, for every cast member, for every musician in the orchestra.

Kristin Chenoweth... Why would you NOT wanna be like Kristin? She's pretty, funny, smart, non-judgmental, hard-working, and extremely talented. The perfect little treasure in a little package. It's like every song she sings turns into a golden hit. She may not have had a great career tv wise in the past, but you see her coming back all the time with that big smile of hers. Currently, she is playing the female leading role in the revival show "Promises, Promises", and I would've automatically bought tickets for her show for my upcoming trip, but she just HAD to stop playing her role a month before I could go there. Oh well, I'm sure there are more opportunities for me to meet her (yes, I'm being that optimistic).

I'll add another Cheno-video here for your viewing pleasure. This is Kristin playing the role of Sally Brown (sister of the famous Charlie Brown) in the musical "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown". Enjoy!

Ahh the power of Youtube... Of course watching a musical live is still the proper and exponentially better option than seeing it on a little screen.  This is the first of 12 videos all posted on Youtube, the comedic musical, Bernstein's Candide (based on Voltaire's Candide).  I trust you can find the rest of the videos yourself.  If you're still saving up for the next musical this will surely cure the withdrawal symptoms you might be feeling.

This live show also features none other than Kristin Chenoweth and Patti LuPone.  I thought the stage was going to explode with so much talent!

Life is happiness indeed!

Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire's book entitled "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West".  As most of you know it is a different take on L. Frank Baum's classic "Wizard of Oz".  Most of the characters are familiar to us who grew up listening to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", but this time, we look at the story of how everything came to be long before Dorothy ever stepped foot in Oz.

I am just so glad that this musical which I really want to see is going to be the musical that I will be seeing very very soon!  Like I said in my previous entry, I'll be going to New York very soon, and when my parents asked me which musical I wanted to see, I immediately said, "Wicked".  Sure, there are many many more musicals that are "must see's", but considering the price of an average theater ticket on Broadway?  I have priorities, you know?

I first found out about Wicked back in 2007, when a friend of mine gave me a copy of the OST of Wicked, Avenue Q, and Little Shop of Horrors.  I never really thought I'd end up listening to it, because the concept really didn't seem that interesting to me at the time.  But oh, when I heard the songs, I was completely captivated.

Right now I am reading the book slowly and surely, because it is not as light hearted as the musical.  However, there's something about the book that makes me want to treat it like mythology and absorb all the knowledge I could from it.  When I watch this show I want to be able to recognize each character on stage and know the minute details that they couldn't pack in to the whole musical.
